Practice Spelling Words using Home-Made Flash Cards

These flashcards are “fabulous faces” because they are of your child’s face. The cards can also be used in games as reinforcement for his spelling words throughout the year and they are great mementoes of the activity that you did together.
Flashcards will never be considered boring once you put your son’s picture on them! He’ll want to play with them all the time.

Fabulous Face Flashcards

Materials:
old business cards or 3″ by 5″ cards
picture of your son or daughter
tape
scissors
paper
pencil
spelling words from group A
  1. Take a picture of your son – any way he would like to pose, and print them on plain paper using a business card template in your word processor on your computer.
  2. Cut out each picture.
  3. Choose the same size card for all the spelling words (either the old business cards, 3″ by 5″ cards or …) instead of a mix of different size cards. If there are different size cards, your child will soon figure out which words are on one size card and which are on another size card.
    • If you are using old business cards, cover the printed side of the old business cards by taping your son’s picture on top of it.
    • If you are using 3″ by 5″ cards, tape your son’s picture on one side (if you feel your son would benefit from using the lines to write his spelling words, then cover the other side with the picture).
  4. On the back have him write his spelling words using the cards from group A as a guide (another opportunity to practice).
  5. Now you can use the new cards to play Go FishConcentration, sorting them by first letters or alphabetizing.

As you can see, the possible ways to use them are numerous. Let us know if you come up with another way to use the cards and we’ll put it on the web site!

Go Fish Game Rules:

  1. You’ll need to make 2 cards for each spelling word.
  2. Shuffle the cards.
  3. Deal out 5 cards to each player and the rest are spread out between the players in a “pond” to go fishing in.
  4. The idea is to collect a pair of cards that are the same and place them on the table. Once all the pairs are collected the game is over.
  5. Usually the youngest player goes first and asks a particular player if they have a certain card. For instance, “Lucas, do you have cat, c,a,t?”.
  6. If the player, who did the asking, received a card from the other player, then he gets another turn.
  7. If the player does not have the card he responds, “Go Fish”.
    • Now the player, who did the asking, goes to the “pond” and pulls out one card and his turn is over.
    • The turn then goes to the next person to the left (go clockwise – it will help when your son is learning how to tell time!).

Variations of the game: You can also make it more of a challenge by having up to 4 cards for each word that need to be collected or have one card with the word and the other with the definition of the word.

Concentration Game Rules:

  1. You’ll need to make 2 cards for each spelling word.
  2. Shuffle the cards.
  3. Lay the cards in rows with the spelling word down.
  4. The idea is to collect a pair of cards that have the same word.  Once all the pairs are collected the game is over.
  5. Each player gets to turn over two cards, if they match they remove them from the table and they get another turn.
  6. If the two cards do not match, they turn them back over leaving them in the same place.
  7. As children become more comfortable with this game they learn that if they watch carefully, they can see matches to use on their next turn. Children get really excited when they know of a match with the card that the other player just turned over.

Variations of the game: You can also make it more of a challenge by having up to 4 cards for each word that need to be collected or have one card with the word and the other with the definition of the word.
