A few years ago I had a silly notion, “Why not make the room look as if leprechauns had visited for St. Patrick’s Day?” So what I did as a lark has turned into a much enjoyed and anticipated tradition! While my students are outside for recess, I, with the help of any adults available, turn over chairs and tables, move things around so they would be more convenient for shorter people of the Irish leprechaun variety. Sometimes there are shamrocks for everyone or a green treat but the look on my students faces when they walk in and see everything topsy-turvy and they exclaim, “The leprechauns have come!” is always worth it! It’s like adding a wee bit of magic to a otherwise normal day!

This year we are making leprechaun cottages (like a fairy house) and my students have lots of ideas to make it the perfect place for them. Of course, some don’t understand that we are just having fun with it and leprechauns will not really be living there but it have been a fun adventure. One student declared we would need a small campfire for the hot dogs. When I asked him, “What hot dogs?” He, very seriously said, “They love hot dogs!” I’ll post pictures as soon as they have finished making them.
