Foods for a Healthier You

I try to buy organic foods but sometimes I can’t find what I want that is organic and it can get expensive – fast.  I love being able to go to the local farmer’s market to get the freshest organic vegetables, but that isn’t always an option.  I know that organic is better for you but I wasn’t aware that according to an article in the Environmental Working Group if we avoid the foods with the most pesticides, additives and hormones, we can reduce our exposure to pesticides by 80%.  So although most of us can’t purchase 100% of our fruits and vegetables due to the higher costs, if we focus on the ones that have the least contamination to buy, we’ll be much better off.   By eating the recommended 5 servings a day of fruits and vegetables from the 12 most contaminated, you could possibly consume an average of 10 pesticides a day.  But those that eat the 12 least contaminated foods consume less than 2 pesticides a day.  The numbers are kind of staggering! What have I been eating?  So being aware of foods to purchase organic is healthier for your family and for the environment. You might want to print out this list to have with you when you go shopping:

12 Most Contaminated Fruits and Vegetables

  1. peaches
  2. tomatoes
  3. apples
  4. sweet bell peppers
  5. celery
  6. nectarines
  7. berries
  8. cherries
  9. pears
  10. grapes (especially imported)
  11. leafy greens (spinach and lettuce)
  12. potatoes

12 Least Contaminated Fruits and Vegetables

  1. onions
  2. avocado
  3. sweet corn (frozen)
  4. pineapples
  5. mango
  6. asparagus
  7. sweet peas (frozen)
  8. kiwi fruit
  9. bananas
  10. cabbage
  11. broccoli
  12. papaya

They also suggest buying organic for: beef, milk and eggs.

The old adage, “Buyer Beware!” couldn’t be more true!  Eat well, be well!
