Oobleck Anyone?

July 9, 2011

Bartholomew and the Oobleck

Looking for something fast and very fun?  I’ve never had a group of children (or adults) that don’t enjoy playing, touching and experimenting with this mixture.  It has many names; Oobleck, Slime, Glurch or Goop and is like Silly Putty. The name Oobleck comes from Dr. Seuss story “Bartholomew and the Oobleck”. Reading the story before or after will be delightful for your child.

Just mix the following and presto-chango – fun!

  • 1 1/2 c. corn starch
  • 1 c. water
  • 3 drops of food coloring (optional – but makes it look cool!)

It will have the consistency of thick pancake batter when you have it all together.

Now let the fun begin!  Notice what happens when you slowly put your hand in it, then quickly poke it.  What does it do?  Will it bounce?  Can you make a ball with it and toss it?  It is amazing! It is a solid and a liquid depending on how you handle it. Oobleck is a liquid and a solid at the same time!  Follow this link if you want to know the science behind it.
