Colonial America – Root Beer

Wooden bowls were used for mixing everything including root beer.

Recipe for Root Beer


  • 1 t. dry yeast
  • 1/2 c. warm water
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 5 t. root beer extract (located in the spice aisle)
  • 8 c. hot water
  • gallon jug with a lid


  • Let your child stir the yeast and the warm water in a small bowl until it dissolves.
  • Have them pour the sugar, yeast mixture, and root beer extract into the jug.
  • You’ll need to add the hot water.
  • Put the lid on the jug and make sure it is tight.
  • Have your child shake the jar until the ingredients are all mixed.
  • Set the jug in a sunny window and let the mixture rest for several hours. Don’t open it up!
  • Then put it in the refrigerator until it is cold.
  • Your family can drink it the next day.
  • Yum!
