Selecting the right supplies for our trip on the Oregon Trail

Our “western” general store complete with gold and silver nuggets that the settlers purchased items for their survival.

This is the display we set up to help our scholars plan for their trip on the Oregon Trail.  A very creative volunteer made our “hide” supply list.  She even wrote some of the letters backwards to give it an old time feel!  Very funny!

Our scholars were grouped into families.  They were given new names and occupations that they will have to bring additional supplies based on what they do.

We explained that on moving west then wasn’t like moving today.  Long ago they didn’t have the luxury of taking everything with them.  They could only take 2500 lbs. on their wagon.  The supply list has numbers in parenthesis that give them the amount of bulk weight units (bwu) which figures for the weight and size of the items.  Each family has to decide on what they felt they needed to survive a 6 month trip.  Then they had to figure out how many bwu it totaled.  They were allowed only 3 of any one item.

Survival

I have enjoyed listening to the groups debating what they really need and why.  After the families have decided on the supplies needed, they will each write it out on a covered wagon template for their own records.
