We Made Scarecrows for the Garden
During our new Summer Daze program the kids made scarecrows for their garden. The kids had fun with it and they got to cut the long grass too!
Here’s what we did:
- We took a recycled piece of wood trim (a dowel rod would work as well).
- Cut some long pieces of grass but you can use hay, if you have it.
- Attached a wire coat hanger that has been straightened to the wood trim, leaving about 2″ at the top to attach the face. We used the universal favorite, duct tape. It can handle moisture and it very durable.
- Put the shirt (we used shirts the kids had outgrown – long sleeves or short work great) on the structure and tucked some grass into the body of the shirt to give it some dimension.
- Use one long piece of grass or a piece of string to tie around the “waist” so the grass doesn’t just fall out.
- Add some more long grass into the sleeves and wrap it to the wire. You can use grass or string here too.
- Now it’s time to paint the face. We used durable plastic plates to paint using acrylic paints. But you can paint a pillow case and stuff it with grass or a Frisbee… anything that you can recycle that would be fun for a head. These aren’t your typical scarecrows.
- Once the paint is dry, attach the head to the wood trim using duct tape.
- Now find a spot in your garden to entertain your feathered friends or just in the front yard to entertain the neighbors!
