How People Learn

Looking to understand how to be a more effective teacher?  I read an amazing book, “Design for How People Learn” by Julie Dirksen.  To say I’m a fan would be an understatement!

One of the many great concepts that she has made concept is how the brain stores information.  We had a discussion about the brain and how their brain sorts through information they have learned while they are sleeping. I explained the concept using Julie’s example of organizing information in your brain is like a closet.  When things are put where they belong, you can retrieve or get the information you are looking for.  When things aren’t sorted and stored in the right places, it is difficult, if not almost impossible, to find it.  My students got it!

The other concept my students were excited about is how the brain gets fired up, literally, when it is working on new information.  In other words, the brain “likes” to be challenged!  She has a picture of brain scans showing an excited brain and a brain just there. It’s an amazing picture.  It really helped my students “see” the benefit to learning!
